First Indian Woman Jockey wins Ladies World Championship, Poland : 2014

Rupa Narpat Singh (aka..Rupa Singh) became the First Indian Woman Jockey to win the HH Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship at Sluzewiec Horse race track in Warsaw, Poland. Sunday- August 24th, 2014

The 48 kg – Rupa Singh participated against a strong field of 10 international jockeys to make her winning debut in the 13th and penultimate round.

It was her first race outside India on the back of an Arabian horse and without whips being used according to the rules. She rode Nicolas who covered the 1600 metres distance 1.56.60 seconds. Andrezej Wojtowicz was the trainer of the winning horse Nicholas.

The event was a part of the HH Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s ‘Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival’.

The Chennai jockey Rupa Singh is the sister of Hyderabad jockey Ravinder Singh.

Indian Beauty Crowned ‘Miss World’ at Sun City, South Africa – brings home India’s 2nd Miss World title : 1994

Aishwarya Krishnaraj Rai (aka… Aishwariya Rai), the 21-year old Indian beauty was acknowledged as the most beautiful girl in the world and crowned ‘Miss World’ at the 44th edition of the beauty pageant in Sun City, South Africa. November 19th, 1994.

The 1st Runner-up was 20-year old Miss.South Africa – Basetsan Makgalemele, accompanied by the 2nd Runner-up, the 18-year old Miss.Venezuela – Irene Ferreira Izquierdo.

Aishwariya Rai won the title participating and competing with 84 other beautiful contestants from around the world.

The Mangalore(Karnataka) girl, daughter of Vrinda Rai was born on November 01st, 1973. She was educated in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Aishwariya won the 2nd place at the Femina Miss. World title in 1994.

She is one of Bollywood’s favourite actresses. A leading Brand Ambassador for India at International Events.

Aishwariya Rai married one of Bollywood’s leading actor Abhishek Bacchan on April 20th, 2007 to become Aishwariya Rai Bacchan. They have a daughter Aaradhya and live in Mumbai.

 

2nd Miss World Crown for India 

Aishwariya Rai became the 2nd Indian girl to be crowned Miss.World. The 1st Indian to bag the crown 24 years ago was Miss.Reita Faria in 1966 (see Post of March 06th, 2016).

Double Crown Internationally for India : Same Year 1994:

In the same year another Indian beauty Miss.Sushmita Sen won the ‘Miss. Universe ‘ 1994 in Manila – giving India for the 1st time 2 World Beauty Crowns.

For the First Time – Birth Anniversary of Dr.B.R. Ambedkar commemorated at the United Nations(UN) , New York : April 2016

Dr.Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (popularly Dr.B.R.Ambedkar aka..Babasaheb Ambedkar) was an Indian jurist, social reformer, politician and economist. He was the First Minister of Law and Justice in Independent India amongst many other positions and accompolishments.

Dr.Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary was commemorated and celebrated at the UN in New York on April 13th, 2016, a day before his actual birthdate.

At the keynote speech delivered by Helen Clark, Chair of UN Development Group and Adminstrator of UN Development Program, she said ” Ambedkar’s work on the empowerment and inclusion of excluded groups, reform of labour laws and promotion of education for all, made him an icon for marginalised people in India and in other countries as well”.

A documentary film titled ‘Dr.Babasahed Ambedkar… A Man of the Century’ was screened for 10 minutes at the UN Conference. The full length documentary of 28 minutes was made by Marathi Film maker Sandeep Manohar Navre.

The event was organised by the ‘Permanent Mission of India to the UN’  in association with ‘Kalpana Saroj Foundation’ and ‘Foundation for Human Horizon’.  The UN Event was titled ‘Landmark 2030 : Agenda for Sustainable Development’.

Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar was born on April 14th,1891 in Mhow, Central Province(now Madhya Pradesh) and died on December 06th, 1956 in New Delhi. He was the youngest of 14 children.

Dr. Ambedkar was educated in University of Bombay(now Mumbai), Columbia University (USA), University of London (UK) and London School of Economics.

Babasaheb was the Chairman of the ‘Constitution Drafting Committee’, the first Minister of Law and Justice. He inspired the Dalit Movement and campaigned against Social Discrimination. He was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1990.
