** Two spacetech startups get access to ISRO facilities, expertise to test rocket systems

The Department of Space (DoS) has entered into a Framework MoU with aerospace startup Agnikul Cosmos for access to ISRO facilities and expertise towards the development and testing of subsystems/systems of space launch vehicles.

The MoU will enable the company to undertake multiple tests and access facilities at various ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) centres for testing and qualification of its single piece 3D printed Semi Cryo engine and other systems.

** TVS acquires 80 per cent stake in Swiss e-bike company

Chennai-based TVS Motor Company has acquired 80% stake in Swiss electric bicycle and personal mobility company EGO Movement for around $18 million. 

This is also TVS’ second major acquisition in Europe after taking over Norton Motorcycles in July 2020.

** World-famous physicist Thanu Padmanabhan dies of a heart attack in Pune

A distinguished professor at Pune’s Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics and a cosmologist, Professor Padmanabhan was selected for ‘Kerala Shastra Puraskaram’ 2021 last month.

** HAL, Rolls-Royce ink new pact for Make-in-India Adour engine spares for global market

As part of the pact signed with Rolls-Royce, Defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will supply spares for the Adour Global Supply chain, and thereby support the former’s international defence customer base.

Adour is a twin-spool, counter-rotating turbofan engine by Rolls-Royce whose defence segment is a market leader in aero engines for military transport and patrol aircraft with strong positions in combat and helicopter applications, as per the company. The agreement was signed and exchanged between B Krishna Kumar, Executive Director (Engine & IMGT), HAL and Abhishek Singh, Senior Vice President – Defence, India and South East Asia, Rolls Royce, in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

** Indian scientists develop noise control absorber mimicking beehives

Faculties at IIT Hyderabad’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, Dr B. Venkatesham and Dr Surya, fabricated low thickness and strong acoustic panels mimicking this property using biomimetic design methodology. The team also developed a mathematical model and calculated optimised parameters, and then fabricated the test samples using systematic, controlled parameters. Subsequently, fabrication of a large sample was done.

They have used two different approaches and their respective prototype machines with two different kinds of materials. One prototype is for paper honeycomb based on indexed Honeycomb Before Expansion process, and another prototype machine is for polymer honeycomb structure, based on hot wire technique.

** Jaiganesh Balakrishna files patents every 3 months on average

Balakrishnan is a principal architect and fellow at Texas Instruments, a company he joined soon after completing his PhD in 2002.

He today holds 75 patents. That’s an average of a patent every 3 months

About 1000 architects and other professionals from the world are likely to attend this symposium, said Surinder Bahga, chairman of Saakaar Foundation.

** IIT Bombay bags top honours at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam International Innovation Conclave

Jams O Rychard from Indonesia won the first prize in the International category, while Krishna from Brazil secured the second position and Marcos came third in the same category. Total prize money of Rs. 1.67 lakh was given to the winners of the conclave.

Sai Prasad from IIT Bombay won the first position for her innovative idea of a skin spray gun which helps in the rapid healing of wounds using the patient’s own skin during the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam International Innovation Conclave which ended on Friday at Chandigarh University.

Raman and Lakshman from the Sethu Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, and Rutvik Mehenge from Trinity College of Engineering bagged the second positions, while Mann Goel from IIT Kanpur, Jai Chachra from Chandigarh University, and Ayushi Sharma from UPES, Dehradun shared the third position. Parkhi from Dass and Brown school Ferozepur secured the first position in the school category while Shankha from SS Public School secured the second position in the same category.
