** India’s first long-lasting ‘steel slag’ road built in this Gujarat city

Waste steel can prove to be a more durable and cost-effective way of making roads in future. In the first such use case of waste steel in India, a road has been constructed using waste steel in Surat at the Hazira industrial area.

It is India’s first-ever ‘steel slag road’, which has been built by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India with CSIR India (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and government think tank Niti Aayog.

Top scientists in India, heads of national laboratories and scientific institutions, and officials congregated at the ‘Science Leaders Conclave 2022’ held at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) here on Saturday.

It is a rare congregation where various aspects of science, its evolution in India, current and emerging challenges, and possible solutions were discussed.

Jayant Sahasrabudhe, organising secretary-VIBBHA, spoke about ‘Contributions of scientists to freedom movement’. The second topic presented on Saturday was ‘Presentations highlighting achievements since independence’.

** DRDO-developed corner shot weapon ready for induction

System bends and captures video feed saving soldiers from surprise counter attacks

A corner shot weapon system (CSWS) designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is at an advanced stage of being inducted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jammu and Kashmir police. 

The CSWS is a special purpose weapon designed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune. It can engage targets located around the corners as the system bends and captures video feed thus saving soldiers from any surprise counter attack and is best suited for urban, close quarter situations

** Two Kerala start-ups bag top prizes in Convergence India Expo

Recognition in pitching competition

Two enterprises supported by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) have emerged winners in the pitching competition at Convergence India Expo 2022 held in New Delhi on Friday.

Troncart Solutions Pvt Ltd and Riod Logic bagged the first and second prize respectively in the IIT Patna Incubation Centre pitch competition organised at the 29th edition of the three-day expo organised at Pragati Maidan.

Founded in 2018 by Aneez Ahamed, Pratheesh V. Nair and Aneesh Chandran, city-based Troncart offers FLOW metering system, a unique solution to calculate utility readings automatically.

Angamaly-based Riod, founded in 2017, is headed by Akhil Joy and Aneesh P.K. The start-up manufactures and develops IoT sensors along with RIOD Live platform that help sense, monitor, control and aggregate real-time data from fields.

** INS Valsura awarded President’s colour

It is the Navy’s premier technological training establishment

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday presented the President’s colour to INS Valsura, the Navy’s premier technological training establishment.

The President’s Colour is bestowed on a military unit in recognition of the exceptional service rendered to the nation, both in peace and in war.

‘Nishan Adhikari’ Lt. Arun Singh Sambyal received the President’s Colour on behalf of the unit in an impressive parade, the Navy said. A special postal cover was also released to commemorate the occasion.

“The award ceremony commenced with insertion of Drum Toli for Pile-of-Drums ceremony. It traces its history back to a time when soldiers on field used to arrange their drums in a pile to form an altar,” the defence spokesperson said on social media.

** IIT Madras, TCS to launch M. Tech course in Industrial AI

It will be offered online; first cohort of students will be from TCS

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are jointly launching an M. Tech programme in Industrial Artificial Intelligence.

The 18-month course will be offered online and focus on industrial analytics. It aims at upskilling employees in corporates in the application of AI to industrial problems. The TCS will provide the first cohort of students.

The Intercontinental region is nearly a $3 billion business unit with 10,000 employees, covering over 60 countries across Latin America, India & South Asia, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, said the company in a statement on March 23.

The professor has also developed a variety of red amaranth (thotakura), which is a high-yielding variety and contains anthocyanin pigment. 

In yet another feather in the cap of the College of Horticulture, Mojerla of Wanaparthy district, Associate Professor in Genetics and Plant Breeding, Pidigam Saidaiah (41) has developed promising seed varieties of pink tomato, yellow tomato, red amaranth and yardlong beans using a pedigree method. Developed by crossing two extreme varieties, these hybrids have several advantages over the common ones. The seeds have been sent to the Horticulture Centre of Excellence in Jeedimetla for testing and are expected to be released in the market soon.

** Nissan India rolls out 50,000th unit of the Magnite

Nissan India on Tuesday said that it has rolled out 50,000th unit of its Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) Magnite from the Chennai plant of Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) alliance.

Terming Magnite as a game changer, Rakesh Srivastava, MD, Nissan Motor India, said in a statement that the company had received over 100,000 customer bookings in domestic & export markets,

“We have been able to achieve the 50,000th Magnite milestone in less than 15 months despite head winds from Covid and the semi-conductor crisis. Our employees and supplier partners have contributed immensely with innovative strategies to overcome this crisis,” said Biju Balendran, MD & CEO, RNAIPL.

Magnite was the first global product to be launched under the Nissan NEXT transformation plan. Since its launch, 50,000 Magnites have been produced in Chennai, despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing semiconductor shortage.
