The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has developed a simple and fast method of swab collection and processing for RT-PCR coronavirus test which could be used in rural and tribal areas.

** Former Anna University Vice-Chancellor M. Anandakrishnan no more

Renowned educationist M. Anandakrishnan died in the city early on May 29, after battling against COVID-19. He was 93.

He served as Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and was chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

A Padma Shri recipient, he is survived by his wife Jayalakshmi Anandakrishnan and four sons – Ramu, Ravi, Satyan and Sridhar.

** MEA’s first directory of diplomats a record of Nehruvian era

Volume is rare to come across and is found only in limited number of libraries and in personal collections

In 1958, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru decided to publish a ‘Statement of Services of Officers of Branches A and B of the Indian Foreign Service’. The responsibility of editing the volume, which contained the biodata of all the diplomats who joined the ministry in the 1940s and the 1950s, fell on KPS Menon Jr. Finally, what emerged was a slim volume of 95 pages containing the details of careers and interesting developments involving many young officials who would shape India’s diplomacy in the subsequent decades. It also shows how Mr. Nehru planned diplomats to be a mix of diverse backgrounds and skills.

** Oral solution for ‘black fungus’ is now ready for technology transfer: IIT Hyderabad Researchers

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) have developed oral solution, which could be mass-produced now, to treat ‘black fungs’ providing huge relief to patients affected with it and doctors finding it hard to treat the patients due to the poor availability of the present medicine.

After two years of advancement of examination, the researchers are now confident that the technology can be transferred to suitable pharma partners for large-scale production.

The Home Ministry empowered 13 more District Collectors in five States — Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab — to grant citizenship certificates to applicants belonging to six minority communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Karishma Dev Dube’s much-acclaimed short movie ‘Bittu’ and Thamizh’s directorial debut Tamil movie ‘Seththumaan’ have nabbed the Grand Prize at the 19th edition of Indian Film Festival Los Angeles (IFFLA) that concluded on Thursday.

Audience awards were also announced to Ajitpal Singh’s feature ‘Fire in the Mountains’ and Aarti Neharsh’s short ‘The Song We Sang’.

** Tata Digital acquires majority stake in BigBasket

Tata Digital Ltd, a 100% subsidiary of Tata Sons has acquired a majority stake in Supermarket Grocery Supplies Private Ltd (BigBasket) – India’s largest e-commerce player in the Food & Grocery segment for an unspecified amount, the company said in a statement.

BigBasket was founded in 2011 in Bengaluru and has expanded its presence to over 25 cities across India since then.
